Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar

Method

  1. Beat the butter and sugar until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes.
  2. Add the egg and vanilla, then beat until smooth.
  3. Whisk the dry ingredients together, then mix them into the wet ingredients just until combined.
  4. Divide the dough into two discs and chill for at least 1 hour.
  5. Working with one disc at a time, roll tablespoon-sized pieces into 5-inch ropes the thickness of a pencil. Shape each rope into a bow by crossing and pinching the ends, then place on a parchment-lined sheet. Chill the shaped cookies for 15 minutes.
  6. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 8 to 10 minutes until edges are lightly golden. Cool on the sheet for 5 minutes, then move to a wire rack.
  7. Once completely cool, dust generously with powdered sugar before serving.

Notes

The dough needs a full hour of chilling before shaping, so plan that into your timeline. If your kitchen is warm, shaping a few bows at a time and keeping the rest of the dough in the fridge helps maintain clean, defined bows.
