Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp fine sea salt
  • 3/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs, at room temperature
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1 1/2 cups fresh blueberries
  • 1 tbsp all-purpose flour, for coating
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

Method

  1. Heat oven to 350°F. Grease a 9-inch round pan and line with parchment.
  2. Beat 3/4 cup butter and sugar until fluffy, then add eggs and vanilla.
  3. Whisk flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a small bowl. Add to butter mixture alternately with buttermilk, mixing until just combined.
  4. Toss blueberries with 1 tbsp flour, then fold into batter gently.
  5. Scrape into pan, smooth top, and bake 30 to 35 minutes until deep golden and a toothpick comes out clean. Cool completely.
  6. Beat cream cheese, 1/4 cup butter, vanilla, and salt until smooth. Gradually add powdered sugar and beat until fluffy.
  7. Spread frosting on cooled cake and serve.

Notes

The cake can be baked a day ahead and wrapped at room temperature. Frost the day of serving for the best texture. If using frozen blueberries, do not thaw and add about 5 minutes to the bake time.
