Ingredients

  • 14 oz firm tofu
  • 2 tbsp cornstarch
  • 2 tbsp neutral oil (vegetable or canola)
  • ½ medium onion, sliced
  • ½ green bell pepper, sliced
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp dark soy sauce (optional)
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp freshly cracked black pepper
  • 2 scallions, sliced

Method

  1. Press the tofu for 10 minutes, then cut into 1-inch cubes and toss with cornstarch until coated.
  2. Heat oil in a skillet over medium-high. Fry tofu in a single layer for 3 to 4 minutes per side until golden and crisp. Transfer to a plate.
  3. In the same skillet, sauté onion and bell pepper for 2 minutes. Add garlic, then soy sauce, dark soy sauce, brown sugar, and black pepper. Simmer for 1 minute until glossy.
  4. Return tofu to the skillet, toss to coat, and cook 1 more minute. Slide onto a plate, top with scallions, and serve immediately.

Notes

Serve right away for the crispiest texture. The sauce will soften the tofu over time, but you can re-crisp in a hot skillet if needed. Leftovers taste even better the next day.
