Ingredients

  • 1 large loaf day-old challah or brioche (about 10 cups), cubed into 1-inch pieces
  • 8 oz cream cheese, cold, cut into small cubes
  • 2 cups mixed berries (blueberries, raspberries, sliced strawberries), fresh or frozen
  • 8 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • ½ cup heavy cream
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ tsp ground cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup packed light brown sugar
  • ¼ cup cold unsalted butter, cubed

Method

  1. Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish. Layer half the bread cubes, then half the cream cheese and half the berries. Repeat with remaining bread, cream cheese, and berries.
  2. Whisk eggs, milk, cream, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt until smooth.
  3. Pour custard evenly over the bread and press down gently. Combine flour, brown sugar, and butter until crumbly, then sprinkle over the top. Let soak at least 30 minutes, or cover and chill overnight.
  4. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake uncovered for 45–55 minutes, until golden and set in the center.
  5. Let cool 10 minutes, then slice and serve warm with powdered sugar and maple syrup.

Notes

For the best texture, let the assembled casserole soak for at least 30 minutes before baking; overnight in the fridge is even better. If you refrigerate it, add 5 to 10 minutes to the bake time.
