Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 tablespoon meringue powder
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons water
  • Yellow gel food coloring, as needed
  • Black gel food coloring, as needed

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Beat butter and sugar until fluffy, mix in egg, extracts, then dry ingredients. Chill dough for 30 minutes.
  2. Roll dough to 1/4 inch, cut 2.5-inch circles, bake at 350°F for 8-10 minutes until edges set. Cool completely.
  3. Stir powdered sugar, meringue powder, and water to make a thick icing. Reserve some white, color the rest yellow, and spread over cookies. Let yellow icing set.
  4. Pipe black stripes and white wing dots with remaining icings. Let dry completely before serving.

Notes

Dough needs at least 30 minutes of chilling time (not included in prep). Cookies keep for a week in an airtight container. For wings, you can also press sliced almonds into the wet yellow icing as a quick alternative.
