Baked BBQ Chicken Recipe

Prep Time 15 minutes
Cook Time 40 minutes
Total Time 55 minutes
Servings: 4 servings

Ingredients

  • 3 lbs bone-in, skin-on chicken pieces
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 3 tbsp brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper

Method

  1. Whisk together the ketchup, brown sugar, vinegar, Worcestershire, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper until smooth. Reserve half the sauce.
  2. Pat chicken dry, season lightly with salt and pepper, then coat with the other half of the sauce. Arrange skin side up in a rimmed dish.
  3. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Roast chicken for 35 to 40 minutes, until internal temp reaches 155°F to 160°F (68°C to 71°C) for dark meat.
  4. Brush reserved sauce over the chicken and broil on high for 3 to 5 minutes, watching closely, until the glaze bubbles and darkens in spots. Rest 5 minutes, then plate and spoon pan juices over the top.

Notes

Let the chicken rest a few minutes before serving so the juices settle and the skin stays crisp. If you want the sauce extra thick and glossy, simmer it in a small pan on the stovetop for 5 minutes before using, then brush it on in the final step.
