Ingredients

  • 6 cups sliced apples, about 5 medium
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1 tbsp fresh lemon juice
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon, divided
  • 1 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1/4 tsp fine sea salt
  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cut into small cubes

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Toss apples with granulated sugar, lemon juice, 1/2 tsp cinnamon, and 1 tbsp flour. Transfer to a 9-inch square baking dish.
  2. In a bowl, combine oats, 1/2 cup flour, brown sugar, remaining 1/2 tsp cinnamon, and salt. Rub in cold butter until clumpy.
  3. Sprinkle topping evenly over the apples. Bake 40 to 45 minutes until golden and bubbling. Cool 10 minutes, then serve warm with ice cream.

Notes

If your apples are particularly tart, increase the granulated sugar in the filling by 1 tablespoon. The crumble is even better the next day; just reheat it in the oven to restore the crunch.
